AI does not affect all young people in the same way!

A fast-forming conventional view says social media harms young people’s mental health and generative AI is now weakening their ability to think.
That debate often assumes AI affects all young people in roughly the same way and treats time spent using it as the main indicator of risk, but emerging evidence does not fully support that view.
A U.S. study of people aged 13 to 24 suggests the real impact depends heavily on each young person’s social and emotional context, with the same tools expanding opportunity for some while replacing human support for others.

United States: Debate is intensifying over the impact of generative AI tools on young people, amid calls for age limits, bans on so-called AI companions, and tighter safeguards. But a recent study suggests the risk cannot be measured by usage time alone and is also shaped by the user’s wider social and emotional context.

Details
Much of the public discussion assumes generative AI affects young people in broadly similar ways and that heavier use is the clearest sign of possible harm. Early findings, however, point to a more complex picture.

The study, conducted by a team at a health-data company led by the article’s author, found that the same technology can open up support and opportunity for some young people while, for others, quietly taking the place of direct human support.

The research surveyed Americans aged 13 to 24 in November 2025 and included more than 100 questions covering AI use, its effects on their lives, and their broader mental-health and life circumstances.

That suggests public policy built on a one-size-fits-all assumption may fall short, because patterns of use, motivations, and outcomes vary significantly depending on each person’s social and emotional environment.

What next?
These findings could push the debate away from focusing only on screen time or usage volume and toward a deeper understanding of young people’s personal and psychological context, which may shape how future AI rules, limits, and safeguards are designed.
