Gizmodo said AI-generated podcasts are no longer a side phenomenon, after a Podcast Index report showed that more than one-third of new podcast feeds are now produced synthetically through artificial intelligence tools.
Details
• The wave became clearer after Google launched audio summaries in 2024 as part of NotebookLM, a feature that turns information into podcast-like audio conversations.
• According to the report, AI-generated podcasts accounted for 39% of new feeds in one day, before standing at 35.4% at the time of Gizmodo’s report.
• The latter figure equals 485 newly created AI-generated podcast feeds in a single day.
• Gizmodo said the rapid flow of this material opens the door to a massive flood of synthetic audio content on all kinds of topics, with the actual size of its audience still unclear.
• The report highlighted Inception Point AI, which had previously said it produces thousands of episodes per week and now has around 10,000 active shows, according to Bloomberg.
• Inception Point AI was the top publisher of new podcasts in Podcast Index data, accounting for 23.6% of total new output.
• Despite doubts about the audience, the report cited The Epstein Files podcast as an example; it gained traction on podcast charts for a period before its feed stopped updating in March.
What next?
AI-generated podcasts are likely to become a new test for audio platforms: will they treat them as ordinary content, or impose labels, restrictions, or transparency standards for listeners as synthetic production grows at this scale?
