1- FIFA President confirms Iran will play in the World Cup hosted by the United States this summer.
2- Statement comes amid stalled peace talks and a looming ceasefire expiration.
3- Uncertainty surrounds Tehran’s position amid security concerns and opposing U.S. remarks.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirmed that Iran’s national team will participate in the World Cup set to take place in the United States this summer, despite escalating political tensions between the two countries.

He made the remarks during an investment forum in Washington, stressing that Iranian participation is confirmed, while expressing hope that conditions will be calmer by the time the tournament begins. He also emphasized the importance of keeping sports separate from politics.

Details
The comments come at a time when peace talks between Tehran and Washington have yet to resume, with the current ceasefire agreement set to expire within days.

On the other hand, U.S. President Donald Trump voiced reservations about Iran’s participation, warning it could pose risks to player safety.

Iran’s position remains not fully settled:

  • The Iranian Minister of Sports had previously hinted at the possibility of withdrawal following earlier military escalation.
  • Tehran discussed with FIFA the option of relocating its matches to Mexico, a co-host of the tournament, but the request was rejected.

According to the draw, Iran is scheduled to play two matches in Los Angeles and one in Seattle, and would only face the United States if both teams advance to later stages.

Historically, matches between the two sides carry special weight, with Iran defeating the U.S. in the 1998 World Cup, before the U.S. returned the win in the 2022 edition.

What’s Next?
Attention is now on Tehran’s final decision as the tournament approaches, and whether political developments will impact the team’s participation or match arrangements.
