Future air forces are preparing to pair crewed fighters with larger, armed collaborative combat aircraft that can escort them, scout defended airspace or patrol independently for incoming drones, according to companies and specialists cited by the Financial Times. The shift would recast pilots as mission commanders overseeing distributed sensors and weapons rather than solely flying dogfights. Aircraft expected from the mid-2030s would combine greater stealth and range with artificial intelligence, intensive data processing and links to lower-cost platforms operating at different altitudes.

- Sixth-generation design: Mock-ups and programme descriptions point to substantially larger airframes, advanced engines, internal weapons bays and survivability built around low observability and range. The GCAP fighter, called Tempest in Britain, has been shown as a large delta-wing aircraft; governments are withholding detailed performance specifications.
- Sensor-led combat: The F-35 already demonstrates the command-node model, using long-range air-and-ground radar, infrared cameras for continuous 360-degree coverage and an electro-optical system for distant target identification. A former senior NATO air force officer expects another sensor and processing leap in sixth-generation aircraft.
- Autonomous mission set: BAE says its Brontanax could fly sentinel sorties while already airborne to counter approaching drones; it is about the size of a Hawk trainer. Kratos’s Valkyrie has flown with the US Air Force and Marine Corps, while Helsing’s CA-1 Europa has yet to complete a test flight.
- Cost imbalance: Douglas Barrie of the International Institute for Strategic Studies estimates each Boeing F-47 at $200mn-$300mn, and advanced autonomous aircraft at $20mn-$40mn. He argues only the US and China can sustain the highest-end combination at scale.
- Operational trade-offs: RUSI researcher Justin Bronk says personnel, maintenance and financing can make many collaborative-aircraft force mixes less effective than spending the same resources on extra weapons and decoys for piloted jets. He considers larger aircraft more viable for surveillance and reconnaissance inside defended airspace, but not inexpensive “combat mass”.
- Human control: German air force chief Holger Neumann says a cockpit operator remains essential near enemy forces when satellite or other communications fail. Machines can compare large data volumes, he said, but intuition and escalation control remain human strengths. Dassault chief Éric Trappier similarly expects algorithms and drones without removing the pilot from the decision cycle.

Western intelligence agencies designate China’s believed large sixth-generation fighter J-36. In Europe, the central fighter element of FCAS collapsed after disagreements between Dassault and Airbus’s German-based defence business.

Germany’s selection among three fighter-bomber drone proposals is the next concrete indicator: Boeing and Rheinmetall’s Ghost Bat variant, Valkyrie with an Airbus mission system, or Helsing’s unflown CA-1 Europa. The decision will show how Berlin weighs European industrial control against demonstrated flight maturity.
