The confrontation between Washington and Tehran escalated into one of its most dangerous moments since the ceasefire began in April, after Iran’s Revolutionary Guard announced it had targeted a U.S. base in Kuwait in response to a U.S. strike near Bandar Abbas airport in southern Iran.
In a statement carried by Iranian media, the Revolutionary Guard said the response was a serious warning to the United States, and that any repeat of such attacks would be met with a more decisive response.
Details:
• A U.S. official said Iran launched 4 one-way drones toward a U.S. commercial ship near the Strait of Hormuz, and that U.S. forces shot them down before they reached their target.
• The official added that the U.S. military targeted an Iranian drone launch unit on the ground near Bandar Abbas before it could launch another drone.
• Washington described the strike as a defensive measure to protect U.S. forces and commercial shipping near the Strait of Hormuz.
• In response, the Revolutionary Guard said it carried out a retaliatory strike against a U.S. base, saying the target was a U.S. base in Kuwait.
• Kuwaiti air defenses intercepted hostile missiles and drones, with no immediate clear announcement from the Kuwaiti side on the extent of the damage or the party that launched them.
• So far, there has been no official U.S. confirmation or independent verification of casualties or damage inside the base the Revolutionary Guard said it targeted.
• The escalation comes as Washington and Tehran are trying to preserve the ceasefire announced in April and push forward a diplomatic track that includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz and addressing Iran’s nuclear file.
What next?
Limited strikes could turn into a cycle of retaliation and counter-retaliation inside the Gulf. Kuwait’s involvement in air-defense interceptions raises the political and security cost of escalation, because any direct hit on a U.S. base or Kuwaiti facility could push Washington toward a broader response and effectively blow up what remains of the April truce and the Islamabad negotiations.
