1- President Donald Trump threatened harsher strikes against Iran and renewed warnings about potentially seizing Kharg Island, the hub of Iran’s oil exports.
2- The United States expanded its military campaign against Iranian-linked targets, while Tehran announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
3- The escalating confrontation is fueling fears that any remaining ceasefire framework could collapse, pushing the conflict into a more dangerous phase.

The latest

The confrontation between the United States and Iran is entering a more dangerous stage as military strikes intensify and both sides exchange threats targeting critical energy infrastructure.

Trump escalated his rhetoric on Thursday, warning Iran of “severe force tonight” and again raising the prospect of taking control of Kharg Island, the main gateway for Iranian oil exports and one of Tehran’s most valuable economic assets.

Trump has repeatedly threatened to target or seize the island as part of a broader effort to pressure Iran into accepting U.S. demands on its nuclear program. Tehran has consistently rejected those demands.

Despite the threats, Trump faces difficult military choices. The United States is under pressure from shortages of long-range munitions, while any operation against Kharg Island could carry significant risks and potential U.S. casualties. Several of Trump’s advisers also oppose a large-scale ground campaign aimed at toppling the Iranian government.

Details

• The U.S. military said it targeted an oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman on Thursday, accusing it of attempting to bypass restrictions on Iranian oil shipments. It was the third commercial vessel targeted this week.

• India said 20 sailors were rescued from the vessel, while three Indian crew members were killed in a separate U.S. strike on another ship on Wednesday.

• A senior U.S. official said recent strikes targeted Iranian radar systems, air defenses, and other military facilities to reduce Tehran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

• The official added that the United States has helped guide more than 200 commercial vessels through the strategic waterway over the past five weeks.

• Iran announced Thursday that the Strait of Hormuz would be closed to maritime traffic “until further notice” in response to the latest U.S. military escalation.

• The move comes after shipping traffic through the strait, which carried roughly one-fifth of global oil and gas trade before the war, had already fallen sharply in recent months.

• Iranian officials accused the United States of targeting a cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman and said the crew had been rescued.

• Iran’s Foreign Ministry said the latest U.S. strikes had rendered the April 8, 2026 ceasefire “effectively meaningless” and warned of “very serious consequences” from the escalation.

• Jordan’s military said it intercepted 20 missiles launched from Iran toward the Azraq area, while Tehran claimed it had targeted a U.S. base there with 12 missiles.

• Kuwait’s Defense Ministry said its armed forces responded to 24 Iranian attack drones that entered Kuwaiti airspace over the past two days, reporting only limited material damage and no casualties.

What to watch

The key question now is whether Trump’s threats regarding Kharg Island remain a pressure tactic or evolve into a direct military objective. Any move against the island, combined with a prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz, could push the conflict into a new phase and intensify pressure on global energy markets and international shipping.
