Key Points

  1. Free Gemini users will be limited to Flash-Lite only starting 9 October, Google said.
  2. Three models were previously available without a paid Google AI subscription.
  3. The change pushes Gemini's stronger reasoning models behind Google's paid subscription tiers.

The latest:

Free Gemini access narrows to a single model on 9 October, when users without a Google AI subscription will be able to run Flash-Lite only, down from the three models available until now. Google said the shift is part of wider changes to model availability taking effect this month. The company’s two most expensive tiers keep full access to the lineup.

Details:

  • The free tier: From 9 October, users without a Google AI subscription will have access to Flash-Lite only, according to Google. That replaces an arrangement under which three models were available at no cost, making Flash-Lite the single entry point for anyone not paying for the service.
  • The Plus tier: Google AI Plus subscribers will have access to Flash-Lite and Flash, but not Pro, the company said. The mid-tier plan therefore gains one model over the free tier while remaining short of the full lineup available higher up the subscription ladder.
  • The top tiers: Subscribers to Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra will continue to have access to all three models — Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro — according to Google. Those two plans are the only ones unaffected by the restriction taking effect this month.
  • Deep Think: Google said AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers will also have access to Deep Think, an option it describes as designed to provide maximum parallel reasoning for complex tasks. The feature is not listed as available to Plus subscribers or to users on the free tier.
  • Notification plan: Google said AI Plus subscribers will receive an email informing them when the changes will take effect for their accounts. The company did not set out a comparable notification process for users without a subscription, whose access narrows on the stated date.
  • Rollout timing: Google framed the move as part of changes to model availability taking effect this month, with 9 October given as the start date for the free tier. The company did not say whether all accounts shift on that date or in stages.
  • Pricing silence: Google did not announce any change to the price of the AI Plus, AI Pro or AI Ultra plans alongside the access restrictions, nor did it set out usage limits attached to Flash-Lite for users remaining on the free tier.
  • The source: The changes were reported from Washington by WAM, the Emirates News Agency, and published via Zawya on 5 October, citing Google for each element of the new access structure across the free, Plus, Pro and Ultra tiers.

Between the lines:

The restructuring draws a sharper line between tiers: Flash-Lite alone defines free use, Flash is what Plus buys, and Pro plus Deep Think are reserved for the two top plans. Reasoning capability, rather than volume of use, is the feature Google has placed behind its paywall.

What’s next

The 9 October start date is the first marker, followed by the emails Google said AI Plus subscribers will receive confirming when the changes apply to their individual accounts.
