Taylor Swift became the most decorated artist in MTV Video Music Awards history on Sunday, moving ahead of Beyoncé after receiving the inaugural Artist-Director Award in Los Angeles. She entered the ceremony level with Beyoncé on 30 wins, and the new honor placed her alone atop the rankings. Swift also won Video of the Year for The Fate of Ophelia and premiered her self-directed Patient Zero video during the live, two-hour CBS broadcast from the Peacock Theater.

• Creative record: Swift said she began working on music videos 20 years ago and has participated in about 60 productions, including 18 that she wrote and directed. The new Artist-Director Award recognizes performers whose direction and creative shaping of videos have expanded visual storytelling.

Chuck D praised Nirvana’s originality and rejection of musical conventions, while Novoselic honored Kurt Cobain and said the band’s work endured because audiences valued authenticity and freedom.
• Stage lineup: Snoop Dogg hosted the ceremony, with performances from Raye, Bruno Mars, Shaboozey, Gunna and Sienna Spiro. The program moved between contemporary pop, country remembrance and alternative rock while recognizing artists from several eras.
