Gemini Passes One Billion Monthly Users as Voice Dominates

Nicole Jeffrey

Key Points

  1. Gemini serves over one billion monthly users, making it Google’s fastest-growing product ever, CEO Sundar Pichai said.
  2. Voice leads engagement, with 63% of users speaking directly to the AI and more relying exclusively on it.
  3. Gemini’s reach spans businesses, students and iPhone users, reinforced by integration across Google’s major platforms.

The latest

Google’s Gemini has surpassed one billion monthly users, a milestone CEO Sundar Pichai described as making the artificial intelligence platform the company’s “fastest-growing product ever.” Pichai announced the milestone in a post on X. The audience is equivalent to roughly one in eight people worldwide and places Gemini alongside Google’s other billion-user services. Usage data shared by Josh Woodward, the vice president overseeing Gemini and Google Labs, shows voice at the centre of its growth, while image generation, screen sharing, education and business tasks are widening how people use the platform.

Details

  • Voice leads usage: Woodward said 63% of Gemini users speak directly to the AI, with a growing segment using voice exclusively. About one in five interactions subsequently extends into another activity, including taking information into search or using screen sharing for real-time problem-solving.
  • Images support businesses: Gemini users generate more than 150 million images each day. Small-business users are among those adopting its creative capabilities, particularly to produce marketing materials. The volume adds visual content creation to the voice and search activities driving engagement across the service.
  • Students attach files: Parents use Gemini’s convenient voice access for everyday tasks, while students represent another active audience. Attachments appear in 38% of school-related requests submitted to the chatbot, reflecting how files and images have become part of educational interactions with the AI.
  • iPhone audience grows: Gemini has more than 100 million active users on Apple’s iOS, the operating system used by iPhones. That gives Google’s assistant a substantial audience within Apple’s ecosystem, where Siri has long served as the native voice assistant but has until recently lagged the leading edge of AI development.
  • Distribution expands access: Gemini is built into Android, the world’s most popular smartphone operating system, making it available by default to billions of people who would otherwise need to download a separate application. It is also integrated with Chrome, Search and Google Docs, providing additional routes for users seeking information or writing assistance. Users may encounter Gemini-generated content through Search or turn to the AI for help drafting a work report.

Background

Google has 13 other products with at least one billion users, including Calendar, the Play app store and Maps. Five exceed three billion users: Search, Gmail, Android, Chrome and YouTube. Unlike a single standalone platform, Gemini operates as a system across multiple Google services, giving users several points of access within the company’s broader product ecosystem.

What’s next

The next growth indicators will be Gemini’s monthly audience after crossing one billion, its 63% voice-use share, its iOS base above 100 million active users and daily image generation beyond 150 million.
