Netflix has acquired Avedon, Oscar winner Ron Howard’s documentary about the life and work of photographer Richard Avedon, and will release it worldwide later this year with an awards push, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed.
Details:
- Festival run: The film had its world premiere at May’s Cannes Film Festival, where it was met with raves.
- The production: It is an Imagine Documentaries and Fifth Season production in association with The Richard Avedon Foundation, with Howard and Brian Grazer among the producers.
- What it draws on: The documentary uses unprecedented access to Avedon’s personal archives, including never-before-seen stills and behind-the-lens footage, plus new interviews with his closest collaborators.
- Avedon’s standing: His portraits of world leaders, supermodels and pop culture figures made him as famous as many of his subjects. He died in 2004 at 81.
- A repeat pairing: The deal reunites Netflix with Imagine Documentaries after Marty, Life Is Short, the Martin Short profile that drew three Primetime Emmy nominations.
What to Watch:
No precise release date has been given, leaving the film’s awards-season trajectory under Netflix’s campaign to be seen.
