The latest:

Nearly half of occupation-specific ChatGPT use — 43.5% — involves tasks tied to a different job, according to OpenAI Economic Research’s analysis of over 800,000 messages from U.S. users, a pattern the company calls “task crossover.”

Details:

• Biggest crossover: 77% of customer-experience tasks, 75% of designers’ and 69% of HR workers’ fall outside their occupation.

• Farthest-traveling work: marketing and engineering tasks appear most often among workers outside those two fields.

• Company size: crossover runs higher at small firms (18.9%) than at large ones (16.3%).

What to watch:

The report is the first in OpenAI’s “Work at the Frontier” series, which it plans to publish regularly. A later signal to watch: when firms convert this task crossover into new job titles and descriptions.
