More than 20 British performers, among them Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan and Harry Potter series actor Paapa Essiedu, are auctioning personal items to fund scholarships for students from Gaza who hold offers from UK universities but cannot afford to attend.
Details:
- Who is taking part: The lineup also includes Brian Cox, Gary Lineker, Paloma Faith, Vanessa Redgrave, Charlotte Church and Harriet Walter.
- The items: Coughlan and her Derry Girls co-star Siobhán McSweeney donated a signed behind-the-scenes photo; Essiedu is auctioning his personal copy of the first Harry Potter book.
- What prompted it: The auction follows the UK government’s announcement that it would help students from Gaza travel and study in Britain, provided they hold fully funded scholarships.
- The universities: According to Phoenix Space, students hold offers from UCL, Imperial and Edinburgh in fields including artificial intelligence and cognitive neuroscience.
What to Watch:
Bidding opens July 27 and runs for 10 days on the Scholarships for Gaza site, with the number of students the proceeds will cover still to be determined.
