Microsoft is reducing its reliance on OpenAI by deploying its own image-generation models in widely used products including PowerPoint and Bing. Model chief Mustafa Suleyman said the new technology delivers better speed, quality and user retention at a lower operating cost.
The shift is intended to reduce the expense of deploying artificial intelligence across Microsoft’s product portfolio. Although the company receives free access to OpenAI models through their partnership, it must still provide the costly computing infrastructure required to run them, making more efficient models a direct source of savings.
Image generation is particularly important because creating or editing a picture is among the first prompts new users try. Microsoft applications also rely on the capability for common tasks such as producing infographics in PowerPoint.
