The Story
Over two and a half centuries, the United States became home to some of the most influential brands in the world. Their impact went far beyond selling products, reaching into lifestyle, culture, and the global economy.
A Morning Brew report listed some of the companies that left a lasting mark on American identity, from soft drinks and fast food to cars, home appliances, and Big Tech.
Details
- Coca-Cola: The company was officially incorporated in Atlanta in 1892, six years after its famous drink was created. Today, it controls around 40% of the nonalcoholic beverage market, while its logo and advertising have become among the most recognizable commercial symbols in the world.
- McDonald’s: Ray Kroc opened the first restaurant under the brand in 1955, before acquiring the rights from the McDonald brothers. The chain now operates more than 36,000 restaurants worldwide.
- Ford and General Motors: Their contribution went beyond carmaking. They helped shape the modern assembly line and organized working hours, and played a central role in U.S. labor union history, especially after the famous Flint sit-down strike in 1936.
- General Electric: Its roots go back to Thomas Edison in 1892. GE helped bring electric appliances into American homes, while former CEO Jack Welch became closely associated with the idea of maximizing shareholder value.
- Big Tech: Microsoft became the first company to reach a $500 billion market cap in 1999, before Apple crossed the $1 trillion mark in 2018. Amazon and Meta also helped define the era of digital companies and celebrity CEOs.
- Other brands: The list also included Walmart, Disney, Nike, Starbucks, and Chick-fil-A, all of which became part of American consumer culture.
Why did they last?
These companies succeeded not simply because they sold products, but because they built instantly recognizable identities. Their logos, slogans, and ads became part of collective memory, while their business models reshaped production, marketing, and consumer behavior inside and outside the United States.
Background
The report comes as the United States marks 250 years since its founding in 2026. Over that period, American companies grew from local businesses into global brands. Their products and symbols are now present in hundreds of countries, making them one of the clearest forms of U.S. soft power alongside cinema, music, and technology.
