Between the lines
Homer does not live when a film merely puts Cyclops, gods and ships on screen. He lives when the deeper structure survives: a man leaves home, is broken on the road, and returns as someone else.
That is why 2001, Interstellar and O Brother, Where Art Thou? can feel closer to The Odyssey than some films that carry its name. The first moved the voyage into space, the second made the return to a daughter a new Ithaca, and the third planted Homer in the American South.
The measure is not fidelity to costumes, seas and monsters. It is whether the film captures the larger circle: the lost home, the seduction of the journey, the test of identity, and return as rebirth rather than arrival.
What to watch
The Odyssey opens on July 17. Nolan’s film will be measured by whether it rediscovers Homer cinematically, or simply delivers a large-scale epic with Greek names and major stars.
