1. Russia launched 70 missiles and 611 drones in a major overnight assault on Ukraine, killing at least nine people.
2. The attack set fire to the Dormition Cathedral inside Kyiv’s UNESCO-listed Pechersk Lavra monastery complex.
3. Zelenskyy urged G7 leaders to increase pressure on Moscow and send more air-defence support.

Details

  • Russia launched one of its heaviest recent overnight air assaults on Ukraine, according to Ukrainian officials.
  • Ukraine said its air defences shot down 50 missiles and 582 drones.
  • At least four people were killed in Kyiv after missiles and drones hit residential areas and civilian infrastructure.
  • Kyiv officials said at least 23 people were wounded in the capital, while strikes damaged power lines and left about 140,000 residents without electricity.
  • Five rescue workers were killed in Kharkiv while responding to fires caused by earlier strikes.
  • The Dormition Cathedral caught fire and suffered major damage during the attack.
  • The cathedral is part of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site founded in 1051 and one of Ukraine’s most important spiritual and cultural landmarks.
  • Zelenskyy called the damage one of Russia’s biggest crimes against Christian culture.
  • French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the strike, saying nothing justified an attack on universal heritage.
  • Russia denied hitting the cathedral and claimed a US-made Patriot air-defence missile may have struck it, without providing evidence.
  • Moscow said its massive strike targeted Ukrainian military sites.
  • Russian officials also said a Ukrainian drone attack killed three people and wounded three others in Tula, south of Moscow.

What Else

The attack comes ahead of a G7 meeting in France, where Ukraine is expected to press allies for stronger pressure on Moscow and more anti-ballistic missile systems. The strikes show how long-range attacks are widening on both sides, even as diplomatic efforts to end the war remain stalled.
