Is Israel moving toward a military occupation of Nabatieh?

Nada Salam

1- Hebrew outlet Walla said the Israeli army’s Northern Command is pushing to expand operations toward Nabatieh in southern Lebanon. 2- The move appears aimed at pressuring the city from its edges and access routes by targeting infrastructure the Israeli army says belongs to Hezbollah. 3- Nabatieh carries major symbolic and military weight, and any escalation around it could reshape the battle between the Litani and Zahrani rivers.

The latest

According to Hebrew outlet Walla, Israel’s Northern Command is pushing to expand the fight toward Nabatieh, not only through airstrikes but through gradual field pressure around the city.

The Israeli plan, as presented in the report, is to weaken Hezbollah’s presence inside Nabatieh and its surroundings, without necessarily making a direct ground entry into the city the first option.

Details

• The report said the Israeli army has begun limited raids on the outskirts of Nabatieh and has used robots to detect explosive devices and armed cells.

• Israel sees Nabatieh as one of southern Lebanon’s most important civilian and economic centers, and as an influential hub within Hezbollah’s support base.

• Officers cited by Walla said Hezbollah used the city’s density and relative distance from the border to build command posts, operations rooms, weapons depots and underground infrastructure.

• Pressure on routes such as Arnoun and the Beaufort Heights could leave Nabatieh militarily exposed even without a direct Israeli entry into the city.

• The move therefore looks more like an attempt to build a pressure ring around the city through Beaufort, Arnoun, Zawtar al-Sharqiya and Yahmor, rather than an immediate assault.

What to watch

Any escalation around Nabatieh would not be military only. The city carries symbolic weight inside Hezbollah’s environment, and targeting it could open the most dangerous phase yet in southern Lebanon.
